2004 Whistler Cross Country Training Camp

August 27-September 1, 2004

Camp Program

The 5-day Whistler Cross-country program is designed for high school boys and girls who want to get a head start on the upcoming cross-country season. It may also appeal to athletes in sports such as soccer or skiing to get good all-round endurance, strength and speed training prior to the season. Each athlete attending this camp will leave with a basic understanding of how to train for maximum performance in races leading up to regional and provincial championships. In addition, daily activities will be structured so that ‘fun’ is the operative philosophy dictating what we do. This camp will be the ultimate training experience – challenging and fun.

Set in the beautiful valley of Whistler, B.C., we can take advantage of miles of exhilarating mountain trails, get up into the alpine for the ultimate ‘high’ and make use of state of the art fitness facilities and sport training experts at the resort.

Objectives of the Camp

  • The overall objective of the camp is for each camper to leave having had an enjoyable camp experience. Training challenges will have presented new learning opportunities enabling each athlete to believe in the possibilities of excellence in performance. Athlete confidence building and social interaction are the goals the coaching staff has built into the program.
  • Training materials including a scientific development program that will optimize performances at the Provincial Championships will be taken away by each athlete.
  • As much as possible athletes will be grouped with those of similar ability and experience to maximize confidence building and enjoyment and optimization of workout performances.
  • It is hoped that teams of runners will come to the camp and thus initiate a unique bonding experience for their school or club team.

Camp Staff

1. Frank Reynolds, Senior Middle Distance Coach, NorWesters Track & Field Club
Frank has been involved in the sport of Track & Field and Cross Country for nearly 50 years as an athlete, administrator and coach. Frank is a certified Level 4 National level coach. Frank is also the chair of the BC Athletics Cross-country Committee; is the Treasurer of the Coaches Association of BC; is the Chair of Athletics Canada Blind Sport Athletics Commission and coaches with Don Steen on the National Blind Sport Track & Field Team. Frank's overall coaching objective is to train athletes holistically - physically, mentally and spiritually; and he follows a long-term development model in developing annual training programs.

2. Cindy O'Krane, Senior Middle Distance Coach, West Van Track & Field Club
Cindy has been coaching athletes for four years after retiring as one of Canada's most accomplished female middle distance runners. Her switch into coaching was seamless and her impact was felt immediately. Drawing on her many years of training and competing at the international level, and having dealt with highs, lows, injuries and lessons learned, Cindy is quickly becoming one of BC's most respected coaches. A unique partnership with Frank has seen two track clubs working together for the betterment of athletes. The success of the partnership is due to the common beliefs and philosophies of the two coaches.

3. Ashley Weber, Middle Distance Coach, NorWester Track & Field Club
Ashley has been coaching athletes for three years after several years as a NorWester middle distance star and a one-year hiatus traveling around the world. Returning from his trip and eager to put something back into the sport, Ashley has turned to coaching and we are the lucky beneficiaries. By combining his University courses in physical and mental training and jumping right into his NCCP theory and technical coaching courses, Ashley has quickly learned what it takes to deliver programs and get results.

Summary
1. North Shore High School Cross Country Coaches:
If you want your school to be successful in the upcoming cross-country season, let our camp program and excellent coaching help you get your athletes ‘jump-started’ ahead of the rest of the competition. There is not enough time to peak in time for the provincial championships if you start your program in mid September. Start with our camp then take over when the athletes get back to school. You’ll be glad you did.

2. B.C. Athletics Athletes, coaches and parents:
If you or your teenager is looking for the ideal training experience in which young athletes come together to workout, learn and have some fun, then our Cross-country camp is 'the camp'. Qualified coaches in an idyllic setting inspire each camper to strive for excellence and return home to continue on and grow as runners and young adults. We will have runners of all abilities coming but minimum age is attendance at high school. For those of you who want to run with the best, already confirmed to attend is Chris Winter, 3 time BC High School Cross Country Champion and bronze medallist at the recent World Youth Games. We look forward to seeing you on August 27th. Details of camp meeting place and time will be advised to each camper when registrations are closed. Registration deadline - AUGUST 20th, 2004.
