NorWesters Track & Field Club "Pull off" Trevor Craven in fine style

Faced with competing with the National Track & Field Championships in Victoria on the same weekend as the Trevor Craven, NorWesters Track Club officials and volunteers did what was necessary to produce the most successful meet in the history of this annual event. Trevor Craven was a promising 14 year old NorWester middle distance who was tragically killed in an auto accident retuning from the Provincial Hockey Championships in Northern BC in 1984. The meet commemorates his memory and dedication to the sport he loved.

Most of the BC Athletics officials that normally would have assisted with the meet were in Victoria. At one point the club considered canceling the meet due to the daunting task of staging the meet with a bare boned staff of officials and many inexperienced volunteers in the club. But Meet Manager Donna Lim drew everyone together and with the combined efforts of parents and athletes helping, the meet ran with few hitches. “This is truly what volunteering is all about” said Ms. Lim. “Everyone gets to know each other and we draw closer as friends and workers all with the common bond of helping the athletes.”

The meet, far from having fewer entries, had many more than anticipated. The quality of competition was excellent as many athletes were using the meet as a final tune-up for the Summer Games the next weekend in Abbotsford. In all 21 new meet records were established over the 2-day event. It was significant to note that 13 of the 21 new records came from the girls as they seem to be coming back to the sport in greater numbers than boys. “It was also gratifying to see a good participation of senior and masters athletes.” said Dawn Copping, Meet Director. “Hopefully next year we will stage our meet on a weekend where we are the “only game in town” and we can continue to build on this year’s success,” added Copping.
